Limestone Post-tension Staircase

Hale. Cheshire.

Post tension staircase in Combe Brune Limestone.

An usual staircase, a divided setting that required a post tensioned stone structure, a first in the world.

The 16 stone steps in French limestone (it could have been in Carrara marble or Botticino marble) are fitted with 4.5 metre long dowels, post-tensioned. The result is  120 mm throats at the thinnest part of the staircase that could not have been achieve with in situ concrete casting.

It took us a week to fit each staircase.

With the quarter stone landing only 180mm the whole object is light and elegant.

The Main contractor and client were extremely impressed with the final work.

We are very impatient to see the cast balustrades fitted.
